Trapezoidal screws are used to convert a rotary motion into a linear motion. The most common trapezoidal screws are manufactured according to a standard called ISO 2901/2903 and DIN 103 with a tolerance of 7e. Trapezoidal screws can be manufactured in two ways; roll forming or turning. The different manufacturing methods give the screw slightly different properties that can be important to take into account in different applications.

The trapezoidal screw gets a very low efficiency in the linear movement because the nut “slides” on the screw and is not supported, typically a trapezoidal screw has an efficiency of about 30%, but this depends to a large extent on how well it is lubricated and how clean you can hold the screw and nut.

The low efficiency also means that the screw becomes self-locking in most cases. Trapezoidal screws can be manufactured with one or more entries for the thread. The number of inputs affects the pitch angle, which is another parameter that determines whether the screw becomes self-locking or not. A third parameter that affects whether the screw becomes self-locking or not is the presence of vibrations. Because of the complexity of self-restraint, it may need to be verified through real testing.

The screws are manufactured in several materials, for example carbon steel type C35/C45, C15 and various types of stainless steel.

Mekanex stocks screws in diameters from 10 to 60 mm with a length of 3 meters, which are both left- and right-handed. However, we can supply screws with a length of up to 12 meters and with a diameter of up to 430 mm. We stock both screws in carbon steel type C35/C45 as well as acid-resistant stainless steel type DIN 1.4404 or AISI 316L. With our advanced cutting equipment, we can also offer pre-cut screws in the desired length.

Nuts are also manufactured in several materials such as steel, bronze and plastic. Different geometric shapes are available. Mekanex stocks round, hex and flange nuts. We have nuts in steel and bronze – redware type RG7 in stock.
